For the last several months, The Griots of Oakland exhibit has been housed at the Alameda County Office of Education headquarters in Hayward, CA. Day after day, educators, administrators, and many others have paused in the hallway to view the exhibit, watch the videos, peruse the book, and reconsider their perceptions of young African American men. The result is encapsulated in the wording of this Public Service Education Award:
“Alameda County Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools commend Angela Zusman, and her non-profit Story For All, for their outstanding commitment to uncovering and sharing the voices of under served youth in our community. We recognize Story For All for its critical role in dismantling stereotypes, humanizing the youth among us and revealing their innate beauty, brilliance and dreams.”
Also recognized was project partner Alameda County Healthcare Services Agency’s Center for Healthy Schools and Communities. We are grateful to ACOE, and particularly Louise Music, Director of Integrated Learning, for the opportunity to showcase the beauty and brilliance of our sons and brothers through this exhibit. This is an important step in changing the narrative about young men of color and creating better policy and supports for these amazing young men and their communities.
